Structure

Academic structure. Archon handles doctrine and theory; Provost handles everything that actually runs. Departments, fellowships, and a small security staff. Technically chartered by the old empire, now legally ambiguous.

Goals

Understand the Drift -- the force-like energy field that underpins magic in this setting -- scientifically. Specifically, why the civil war seemed to destabilize or mutate it. And what the mutations mean.

Philosophy

They sit uncomfortably between the Pale Covenant's mysticism and the Ardent Republic's materialism. Their position: the Drift is real, measurable, and deeply strange. Ideologues on both sides make bad scientists.

Limits

Will not conduct research on unwilling subjects. Will not weaponize findings. Thorne has refused military contracts four times, at significant cost to the Institute's funding. He is increasingly alone in this position.
