Kael Vass
FILE STATUS: CLASSIFIED

// Latest — Session 2
He had the angle and he had the grip. He went into the roll already composing the line he would say afterwards, because that is how it works: you land it, you smile, you move on and nobody asks how. Her hand was not there. He has run it back perhaps forty times since and it comes out the same every time — fingers closing on nothing, the heat coming up, a sound he has decided not to think about. Then the elf says it out loud on the shuttle, mildly, like a man handing back a dropped glove. Kael has not answered him yet.
// Standing Case File
His cellmates have heard fragments of strange conversations in languages no one recognizes. Other nights, he'll wake abruptly and spend hours staring at the ceiling as if listening to something no one else can hear.
Kael has avoided every opportunity to prove himself with violence. The few inmates who've tried to intimidate him discovered he's unnervingly fast.
One day an inmate joked,
"Bet you couldn't get out of here."Kael looked around the cafeteria for a few seconds and replied,
"Me? Three minutes. Everyone? Different problem."Then he went back to eating. He never smiled. Nobody knows if he was joking.
Every couple weeks someone in a very expensive suit comes asking questions about him. They never visit. They just ask, then leave. Even the warden seems nervous afterward.

He says almost nothing and does almost everything. Checks the dead guard for a key before anyone else thinks to. Pockets a set of homemade thieves' tools. Throws the lever. Hands the baton to the person who can actually use it. When the tortle asks who sent him, Kael asks who sent the tortle. Whatever's been running quietly in the background for him — and something always is — the ceiling coming down didn't switch it off. If anything, the chaos is useful.
// Connection Map
Answered every one of the old tortle's questions with a question. Neither of them blinked.
Threw one of the two levers that let the pirate out, and told him to his face that he owed them for it.
The one who told the boy to come with them if he wanted to live.
Reached for her hand as the girder went and closed on nothing. He has not accepted that explanation and nobody has offered him a better one.
Went through the catwalk himself a minute later, and was hauled back up by a pseudopod and a dopey grin.
